EDL Splinters in Patriotic Unity Offensive
In this article we will look at the links between the Facebook spammer Eva Silver (“Ruby Red” as of 26/1/14) and the new “patriotic unity” offensive of the English Volunteer Force and related hard-line splinter groups from the English Defence League. These groups are in the process of trying to coalesce a more extreme and more confrontational version of the EDL now that the EDL has reiterated that they are not welcome. (See: English Defence League fall apart due to bitter infighting )
The chances are that if you administer a Left or activist Facebook group you will have come across Eva Silver who used to use the picture of the “artist taxi driver” Mark McGowan. This Facebook identity is truly ubiquitous being subbed to over 650 groups. In the past it seemed to be rather benign posting the occasional but tolerable spam for various progressive causes.
Since the New Year it has become apparent, thanks to a posting from Roland Rance on Facebook, that there is a more sinister side to Eva Silver. This identity is also subbed to a very large proportion of Far Right sites related to the EDL and their various spin-offs. In itself that would not necessarily be a cause for concern but Eva is helping administer some Far Right sites now and is actively promoting counter-jihad and Islamophobic material.
Of particular concern is a Facebook group that Eva Silver is promoting which gives a soft-gloss to the March 15th “march on Parliament” demonstration being promoted by the English Volunteer Force and the various hard-line splinters that have come out of the EDL over the years. This “patriotic unity” initiative encompasses the following groups who apparently support this demonstration:
- English Volunteer Force (EVF)
- South East Alliance (SEA)
- East Anglican Patriots (EAP)
- Casuals United (CU)
- Scottish Defence League (SDL)
- North West Infidels (NWI)
Eva Silver and the “lawful rebellion” (Magna Carta) Facebook group
The Facebook group being promoted by Eva Silver is OUR GOVERNMENT ARE IN BREACH OF CONTRACT – “TIME TO KICK THEM OUT”. It is aimed at those on the softer Far-Right who go in for the “lawful rebellion” (Magna Carta), kind of anti-EU politics. This is people on the fringes of groups like UKIP, the British Constitution Group, the BNP and those in the Freeman of the Land circles (see: Resisting the lure of the Freeman movement). There is no indication on this Facebook group that it has any connection whatsoever with the EVF and the Infidels and their ilk. Indeed it comes across as an attempt to dupe people into supporting a protest involving peacefully walking into Parliament to deliver a copy of the Magna Carta. There is no indication that it will be a march of some of the most extreme head-bangers on the Far Right getting drunk and kettled by riot police. It is not the first time that the hard Far-Right have linked with the softer “lawful rebellion” types as happened at one of their court cases in Liverpool in 2011, see The British Constitution Group In Birkenhead.
A pinned post by Bossman DjDavey Jay explains what the group is about:
PLEASE SHARE THIS GROUP WHEREVER YOU SEE FIT
WE ARE AWARE OF WHAT THE MAGNA CARTA STANDS FOR AND MEANS TO THIS DAY, YOUR TIME HAS COME, ITS THE PEOPLES TURN NOW!!
The movement has begun, we will make history by marching to the houses of parliament and 10 Downing street to deliver a copy of the Magna Carta, Lawful rebellion as defined in history via the words in the Magna Carta. 15th March we will descend upon the government, all groups welcome to join us, this is for the people against the corporation led so called leaders, this is the one, this is whats needed to make our country right and just. We can do this its our right to do so against a tyrannical regime as noted in the Magna Carta, we call all the people to be as one, check back daily for posts and recordings and videos by the admins, lets make a change.
The admins of this group were all added by Eva Silver and we will take a look at each one of them in more detail. What they all share is involvement or interest in online radio very reminiscent of US style redneck talk radio. Bossman DjDavey Jay and Lazarus McDangerous have been co-hosts of shows on Motiv8RadioFm and have also worked with DJ Lang.
Dave Russell aka Bossman DjDavey Jay
Dave Russell is based in Herne Bay in Kent and was active in that EDL division. As Bossman DjDavey Jay he is a regular on Motiv8RadioFM. He posts his vile racist disturbing anti-jihad rants on youtube.
The EDL Herne Bay division has recently abandoned the EDL in favour of “patriotic unity” with the groups mentioned above. The following screen grab, which incidentally has been circulated by Exeter’s infamous Bob England, gives a flavour of their position.
This person is subbed to literally hundreds of Left and progressive groups including those related to cuts, to benefit cuts, and even anti-racist and anti-fascist ones. Typically on progressive groups Eva Silver makes “progressive” and unobjectionable postings but in recent weeks some vile stuff has been circulated on the Facebook pages of a vast number of local EDL and EDL splinter groups. Quite a few of these posts are videos by Dave Russell aka Bossman DjDavey Jay.
In the past Eva Silver used to spam the Left rants by the ‘Artist Taxi Driver’ Mark McGowan and even used his picture for her profile. For those unfamiliar with “chunkymark” his style tends to be a rant with lots of swearing in quite a humorous way on various issues. He has done interesting interviews in his taxi with Owen Jones and John McDonnell M.P. No doubt Mark would be mortified that someone who used his picture is now promoting Far Right material by Dave Russell that has a similar style in the sense of lots of swearing except that this material is not funny – it is deeply offensive and often disturbing.
In the following screen grab we have an example of Eva Silver promoting the “lawful rebellion” group. It has been spammed to several dozen Far Right Facebook groups.
In this screen grab we see Eva Silver promoting a group to debate “illegal immigration and islam” with the same group who are the admins to the lawful rebellion (Magna Carta) group.
Another Facebook group that is run by Eva Silver is NONE OF THE ABOVE CAMPAIGN (VOTING). This has over 1500 members very many of whom will be politically on the Left. The admins are Eva Silver and Junior Powell (see below). It is a rip off of a genuine campaign aimed at standing candidates in elections on a “None of the Above” (NOTA VOTE) ticket on the basis that the mainstream parties are rubbish. This in turn is a spin off from NOTA UK which is simply a demand for ‘None of the Above’ to appear on ballot papers with no proposal to stand candidates. The official THE NONE OF THE ABOVE MOVEMENT (NOTA UK) and the separate None of the Above (NOTA VOTE) Facebook group (registered political party of the same name) have no connection with the Eva Silver group at all (see postscript disclaimer below for more on these campaigns).
In this screen grab (in 2 parts) Eva Silver and Lazarus McDangerous have a racist exchange about being swamped by Asians.
Another part of this team is Lazarus McDangerous who is a self-styled “British Constitutional Patriot”. He is another host of online rants which seem to be largely devoted to issues like the British Constitution and the Magna Carta nonsense. He mostly uses mixlr.com for his broadcasts although he has done joint broadcasts with Bossman DjDavey Jay. His facebook likes include The British Tea Party, None of the Above, British People against Foreign Aid and London BNP.
Stephen Lang aka DJ Lang
Our trio of admins who are DJs is completed with Stephen Lang who is hosted on Constitutional Patriot Radio.
The last of the admins is Junior Powell. This account has only 3 friends on Facebook; Eva Silver, Bossman Davey and Bossman DjDavey Jay. Presumably it is an account owned by one of our gang. The only other thing worth mentioning here is that this account is subbed to 85 Facebook groups which are almost entirely on the Left including several Left Unity local groups and again the None of the Above group.
SECURITY NOTE: This issue could effect several hundred activist Facebook groups. There is a very open culture on Facebook and admins tend to let anybody on to a group. Perhaps a simple question admins should ask themselves is whether they should let on people from 100s of miles away with no link to the locality or the cause concerned. We would certainly recommend removing Eva Silver and any of these accounts as a security risk.
NOTE 5/4/14: A number of developments are covered in a follow up article:
POSTSCRIPT: Clarification on the GENUINE None of the Above
UPDATE 22/1/14: None of the Above (NOTA VOTE) registered political party
Exeter EDL News wrote to the admins at the None of the Above (Nota Vote) Facebook group (http://notavote.co.uk/) to help clarify their relation if any with the Eva Silver group. We are happy to publish the reply of their admin team:
Firstly Eva, or any of her ‘team’, have nothing to do with this campaign in any capacity whatsoever.
Two months ago she attempted to hijack this campaign for her own ends.
We deleted her from this group along with other leading members of her None of the Above VOTING groups.
This group has been in existence for over a year and was growing quite well I believe Eva has deliberately tried to derail it.
This campaign is genuine it has recently registered as a political party with the electoral commission and intends entering candidates on a reform based manifesto in 2015.
UPDATE 26/1/14: Official NOTA UK Movement (calling for None of the Above on ballot paper)
Today we have received the following email which we reproduce to clarify points on the official NOTA UK campaign. We have amended the article above to clarify this.
Hi. Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you for your post on Eva Silver. She infiltrated our group as well, I’ve always had my suspicions but she is now gone as a result of your article.
However, your article does contain a glaring error that I am keen to correct if possible.
The group that you have linked to and cited as being the official None Of The Above campaign isn’t at all, it is in effect a splinter group of the official campaign which can be found here: http://notauk.org/
I have been running NOTA UK since 2010, the group you have linked to is completely separate and calls itself Notavote. It is a political party intending to stand candidates ona NOTA platform in 2015, I was briefly involved with them when they were just anothr NOTA group on facebook, before their contradictory political ambitions became apparent.
Our NOTA campaign is simply calling for an official NOTA option on the ballot and making the solid arguments for it. We have already achieved some brief but significant mainstream media coverage on BBC Radio 4, Jeremy Paxman even called for NOTA on The One Show last month.
We are keen to distance ourselves from Notavote for two reasons:
1: Standing candidates on a NOTA platform is a contradiction in terms that undermines the solid arguments we are making for it and as such could hand a potential easy PR victory to enemies of reform.
2: I know from my dealings with them that they are extremely susceptible to being taken over by the likes of Eva and that the admins are ambitious people with political agendas of their own – the antithesis of what a campaign for a bona fide NOTA option should look like, in other words.
I would therefore be very grateful if you could edit your article accordingly, stating clearly that the group your have linked to is a political party standing candidates on a NOTA platform and not the official NOTA campaign, ideally with a link to our website or Facebook group also: THE NONE OF THE ABOVE MOVEMENT
